MazuriaCopernicus Museum and the cathedral hill

Mazuria, the beautiful country of north eastern Poland provides excellent conditions for rest in the peace and quiet of its forests and lakes far away from city noise and traffic. The forests are rich in fruits and wildlife. The lakes and waterways offer facilities for sailing. Anglers may catch the fish of their dreams. The Mazurian region is a land of about 4000 lakes. There are lakes such as Sniardwy or Mamry, over 39 square miles in area; deep ones such as Hancza which is 354 feet in depth. The shorelines of these lakes are extremely varied. There are open shores with beaches accessible for swimming, as well as strips overgrown with reeds and rushes. Some are roofed by lake side trees or tall forests. Another feature of this region is the fact that over 30% of the area is covered by forests. The lakes and rivers are home to many species of fish: bleak, lavaret, pike, perch, catfish, eel, trout, roach among others. The shorelines, bushes and forests are nesting grounds for flocks of wild duck, goose and crane. Majestic swans ornament the lakes. Wild boar, deer, badgers and even elk and European bison live in the forests.

Krutynia River KayakingThe wealth of game, forest recesses and aquatic and marshland birds draw hunters from all over Europe each year. Added attractions are the gamekeepers' and foresters' huts located amidst the forests. More than one hunter has taken back with him unforgettable memories and his ultimate hunting trophy. Horses from nearby farms in the region are available for riding. Photo opportunities abound.

Apart from nature's attractions there are many fine interesting towns and historical monuments: Suwalki, Augustów, Elblig, Olsztyn, Lidzbark Warminski, Gizycko, Ostróda, Iliawa, Mikolajki and many others are excellent centres. Additionally, there are many resorts located by lakes giving perfect opportunities for rest and recuperation.
