Almost everything you can get at home you can find in Poland but what is special? Certainly there is too much to list here! As a first guide the following is suggested knowing that everything will be distinctly Polish and that you will not be disappointed.
Vodka
Polish Vodka is inexpensive and the best in the world. There is an amazing number of varieties each with their own distinctive taste and strength. Even those who "cannot even think of drinking straight Vodka" are converted when they try it! Ladies might like to try a flavoured type. Cherry is popular. Everyone seems to like Zubrowka with its bottle containing a blade of grass. Whatever type, freeze the bottle until covered in frost before serving, preferably in chilled glasses.
Amber
Fossilised tree resin, Amber is a valuable and attractive material for jewelry. Amber bracelets, pendants, rings, earrings, brooches, necklaces are available in every imaginable design, classical and modern, usually with silver mounts. The quality is first class and the low cost very tempting! Pieces can also be made to your own design. Poland is famous for the high quality of its jewellery shops which are everywhere so beware!
Chocolates
Polish chocolates are so tempting they should be banned! The consul, who is a chocoholic, admits to an addiction for Wedel Ptasie Mleczko and Plums in Chocolate made by Walter. There are many others just as terrible. Remember, you have been warned!
Books
Poles love reading and bookshops are everywhere while guide books, Polish recipes, local history and customs are available at local tourist offices. Excellent English language "coffee-table" type books are relatively inexpensive and are of the highest quality. There is a wide choice of interesting subject matter, especially Polish cities, culture, geographical features and areas, history, and way of life.
Glass
Poland has a long tradition in high quality glassmaking, a fact increasingly recognized by discerning buyers in overseas countries as well as visitors. Drinking glasses, vases and decanters are but a small part of what is inexpensively available.
Art
Galleries displaying the work of talented Polish artists are to be found in most larger towns and cities. Warsaw is full of them. Something for every pocket and taste can be found and browsing is almost a national Very special is poster art, modern painting and graphics. Some very high quality galleries offer outstanding work.
Folk art and crafts
Visit any country fair, the further away from main highways and tourist routes the better, and you will find something special. Alternatively any branch of the folk-art shop chain Cepelia will do, they specialize in such crafts.
Dolls in regional costume, decorated pottery, religious carvings, hand-woven shawls and bedspreads, all have an infinite variety. Very special indeed is the work of the lacemakers of Istebna and Koniakow.
