UNESCO In Poland
UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. UNESCO was founded on 16 November 1945. In short, UNESCO promotes international co-operation among its 191* Member States and six Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication.

Poland has a number of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, including the historic centres of Krakow (1978) and Warsaw (1980) and the Muskauer Park/Park Muzakowsi (2004).

The Auschwitz concentration camp, inscribed in 1979, is a symbol of UNESCO's commitment to "strive for the dream of peace and universal cooperation". The country has been working hand-in-hand with the Organization since 2002 on a programme of conservation and restoration of Auschwitz in order to make it more accessible. An international centre recalling the history of the Holocaust (International Centre for Education on Auschwitz and the Holocaust) was inaugurated in 2005.

Poland joined UNESCO on November 6, 1946.

The Organization supports the country's efforts to achieve the Dakar goals set in 2000 for the Education for All programme. Poland joined the Associated Schools Project network (ASPnet) in 1956 and now has around 100 schools participating. It has also taken part in several key projects such as the "Great Volga River Route" which encouraged associated schools in countries located along the route of the Volga to cooperate in promoting sustainable development. Poland is also the coordinating country for the Baltic Sea Project. This project, launched in 1989 as part of the ASPnet network, is aimed at mobilizing schools in the nine countries along the Baltic Sea to collectively consider the environmental problems facing the region and its inhabitants.
